This article briefly describes why observing the rules on data protection are so important for an organisation to be aware of.
Principle 7 of the Data Protection Act states that:
"Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss, destruction or damage to personal data"
This means that under the Data Protection Act 1988 every organisation has a legal responsibility to safeguard the privacy of anyone whose information they hold, whether this is in electronic format - such as on a PC or laptop hard disk - or a printed copy. The Data Protection Act then puts a responsibility on an organisation to remove or destroy it when no longer needed. And if you fail to comply with these rules, you could be liable to pay compensation to individuals who suffer loss, damage or distress as a result of their data falling into the wrong hands and then being used for inappropriate purposes.
How we can help?
By using Village Internet's Disk Cleaning Service, this will not only protect your customer's interests but also demonstrate due diligence in your efforts to securely erase any confidential information. And of course, you may have noted that you can be caught should 'accidental loss' take place. We think you would be even harder pressed to demonstrate due diligence if you were then to purposely dispose of a hard disk without first having taken the precaution of cleaning it first.
