Disk Cleaning Terminology

Terminology

Terms can often interchangeable depending on the operation being performed, and we hope this page helps clarify any confusion that may exist.

Disk Cleaning

Disk Cleaning is the service offered by Village Internet to remove or overwrite data from a hard disk or other long-term storage device so that for normal, practical purposes the existing data can no longer be seen, nor extracted. We are aware that 'disk cleaning' can also often refer to cleaning DVDs and CDROMs which are unreadable due to surface damage such as scratches.

Data Cleaning

The term 'data cleaning' may be seen as more appropriate, but this term has also been used by major software suppliers. Especially when it comes to the subject of operating systems or databases, the term 'data cleaning' can be used to refer to a number of actions including, removal of duplicate or redundant data, or improved logical storage of files to improve the speed at which they can be accessed.

Disk Shredding

There can be some confusion when it comes to the terminology in our area of operations. However, we believe that the term 'disk cleaning' best describes what we do, as the term 'disk shredding' is often used by companies that physically destroy PCs and their components using a metal shredder.
